To Shuppim and Hosah the lot came forth westward, with the gate Shallecheth, by the causeway of the going up, ward against ward. 1 Chronicles 26:16 (KJV)

Context:

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical record that focuses on the genealogies, religious duties, and organization of the tribes of Israel, particularly the tribe of Levi and its responsibilities in the service of the Tabernacle and later the Temple.

Divisions of the Gatekeepers:

In 1 Chronicles 26, the chapter provides an account of the divisions of the gatekeepers among the Levites. Gatekeepers were responsible for the security and order around the Temple, ensuring that only authorized individuals entered and protected the sacred space. They were appointed by King David and later under the reign of his son, King Solomon.

Now, let’s examine verse 16 in more detail: “To Shuppim and Hosah the lot came forth westward”: Shuppim and Hosah were among the gatekeepers chosen by lot to serve in the western region of the Temple. The casting of lots was a common practice used to determine the distribution of responsibilities and tasks among the Levites. It was seen as a way of seeking God’s guidance in making these decisions.

“With the gate Shallecheth”: Shallecheth was one of the gates in the Temple complex. It was likely a gate through which people would exit the Temple area. Shuppim and Hosah were assigned to guard and maintain order at this particular gate.

“By the causeway of the going up”: This refers to a path or road that led to the Temple or ascended to a higher level within the Temple complex. The gatekeepers were stationed near this causeway to regulate the movement of people entering or leaving the Temple.

“Ward against ward”: This phrase indicates that the gatekeepers were assigned specific areas or sections within the Temple, and they were responsible for guarding and maintaining order within their designated area. They worked together in harmony, each fulfilling their duties in their respective ward.

Overall, this verse provides a snapshot of the organization and responsibilities of the gatekeepers in the Temple during the time of David and Solomon. It highlights the meticulous attention given to the order and security of the sacred space, with gatekeepers assigned specific tasks and areas to ensure the smooth operation of the worship and religious activities.
