1 Chronicles 28:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

“Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel.”

This verse is part of King David’s address to the assembly of leaders and officials of Israel, where he reveals to them God’s divine plan and his personal calling to be king.

Let’s break it down and explore its significance:

God’s Choice:David acknowledges that it was the LORD God of Israel who chose him to be the king over Israel. It highlights the divine sovereignty and authority in the selection of leaders. David understood that his appointment as king was not based on his personal merit or accomplishments but on God’s deliberate choice.

Preeminence of Judah:David mentions that God had chosen Judah to be the ruler. This refers to the tribe of Judah, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, which held a significant role in the history of Israel. The Messiah, Jesus Christ, would later come from the tribe of Judah, fulfilling the prophecy in Genesis 49:10. This choice of Judah as the ruling tribe demonstrates God’s intention to establish a kingdom that would ultimately lead to the coming of the Messiah.

God’s Favor on David:David recognizes that among the sons of his father, God specifically favored him to become the king over all Israel. Despite being the youngest and least likely candidate, God looked upon David and saw his heart. David’s trust in God and his dedication to following Him wholeheartedly made him a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). This verse emphasizes the divine orchestration of David’s kingship and his role in the unfolding plan of God. It demonstrates that God is the one who establishes and raises up leaders according to His divine purposes.

David’s humble recognition of God’s choice and favor should encourage us to seek God’s will in our own lives and trust in His guidance.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 28:4 highlights the significance of God’s sovereignty in the selection of leaders and serves as a reminder that our calling and position come from God.

It encourages us to be faithful and devoted to God’s plans, relying on His wisdom and direction as we fulfill the roles and responsibilities He has entrusted to us.
