1 Chronicles 29:1
Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the Lord God.
1 Chronicles 29:1 (KJV)
Context
In 1 Chronicles, David prepares Israel for the building of the temple. He speaks to the whole congregation, not to a small group, showing that this matter concerns every person. The task will be carried out by his son Solomon.
Meaning
David declares that God alone has chosen Solomon. This choice did not come from human ambition or family custom, but from the Lord’s own will. The words “young and tender” mean that Solomon is still inexperienced and not fully mature. David does not hide this weakness; he states it openly before the people. The work is great because the temple is not a palace for a king, but a house for the Lord God. Its purpose is to honor God and to be a place where His presence dwells among His people.
Biblical connections
David had already expressed the same concern about Solomon’s youth in 1 Chronicles 22:5, where he said that Solomon was young and that the house to be built must be exceedingly magnificent. That earlier statement shows that David’s words here are not sudden, but part of a continuing plan. God often chooses the young and the weak to do His work, so that His strength is seen clearly.
Application
This verse teaches that all service for God is sacred. The temple was not for human praise, and our work in the church is not for personal honor. When we serve, we should remember that the Lord is the one we are serving. David’s example also encourages us to accept God’s choices, even when they seem surprising. We can support those whom God has called, just as the congregation later gave generously for the temple.
Reflection
God’s call does not depend on our ability or experience. He chose Solomon, who was young and tender, to do a great work. If you feel too weak or too young for a task, remember that God is the one who chooses and equips. The work may be great, but the Lord is greater. Trust His calling and give your best to Him.
