2 Chronicles 2:18
And he set threescore and ten thousand of them to be bearers of burdens, and fourescore thousand to be hewers in the mountaine, and three thousand and sixe hundred ouerseers to set the people a worke. 2 Chronicles 2:18 (KJV)
This verse is part of a description of King Solomon’s preparations for the construction of the temple in Jerusalem. Solomon had sent a message to King Hiram of Tyre, requesting skilled craftsmen and materials for the building project. In response, Hiram sent him a skilled craftsman named Huram‑abi, along with timber and other necessary supplies.
The allocation of labor is detailed in three categories. Bearers of burdens numbered seventy thousand and were responsible for carrying heavy materials and supplies needed for the temple. Hewers in the mountain numbered eighty thousand and were assigned to cut and shape stones from the mountains. Overseers numbered three thousand six hundred and were appointed to supervise the work and ensure its proper execution. These workers were drawn from the resident aliens within Israel’s borders, as indicated in the surrounding passage.
Solomon recognised the importance of skilled labour. The construction of the temple required both physical labour and craftsmanship, and by enlisting skilled workers like Huram‑abi, Solomon ensured that the temple would be built with excellence and precision.
The organisation of the workforce demonstrates Solomon’s ability to manage a large‑scale construction project. By appointing overseers, he established a hierarchical structure to supervise the workers and to keep the work progressing smoothly.
The building of the temple was not a personal endeavour of Solomon but a fulfilment of God’s command. God had chosen David’s son to build a house for Him in Jerusalem, and Solomon’s actions in organising the workforce were in accordance with those divine instructions.
Lessons and application flow from this passage. First, we should recognise the value of skilled labour in any significant task, whether building physical structures or undertaking other projects. Second, Solomon’s careful planning and coordination inspire us to organise and manage our own endeavours with effective leadership. Third, aligning our actions with God’s purposes leads to a life of purpose and fulfilment. Finally, the allocation of labour highlights the importance of teamwork and delegation; no task is too great when individuals work together, each using their unique abilities.
In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 2:18 highlights Solomon’s strategic organisation and management of the workforce for the temple’s construction, reminding us of the value of skilled labour, the necessity of effective project management, and the significance of aligning our work with God’s purposes.
