2 Chronicles 20:1

It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.

2 Chronicles 20:1 (KJV)

This verse opens a serious crisis in the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah. The phrase “It came to pass after this also” links the event to the preceding chapter, where Jehoshaphat had returned from Ramothgilead and had been reforming the nation’s civil and religious life. He had appointed judges and urged the people to follow the Lord. Now, just when peace seemed possible, a coalition of enemies gathered against him.

The attackers were the children of Moab and Ammon, both descendants of Lot, along with “other beside the Ammonites.” Some translations identify this group as the Meunites, a people from the region of Maon or Arabia. Their combined forces came to battle, showing that the threat was real and well organized. The verse highlights a sober truth: even a faithful, reforming king faces opposition.

The enemies’ ancestry matters. Moab and Ammon descended from Lot, Abraham’s nephew, so they were distant relatives of Israel. Yet they now opposed God’s people. This reminds us that earthly ties do not guarantee spiritual harmony. The coming narrative will show that the proper response to such pressure is to turn to the Lord in prayer and dependence, as Jehoshaphat does in the following verses.

Jehoshaphat’s situation speaks to believers today. We may follow God faithfully and still face sudden trials. The coalition of enemies pictures the many pressures that can gather against us—financial, relational, or spiritual. Like the king, we should not rely on our own strength. Instead, we can seek God through prayer, Scripture, and the support of fellow believers. The battle belongs to the Lord, and He is able to deliver.

This verse sets the stage for a dramatic test of faith. It asks us a simple question: when trouble comes, where do we turn first? Jehoshaphat’s example encourages us to seek God before we seek any other solution. The same God who answered him is ready to guide and strengthen us in every challenge we face.
