2 Chronicles 19:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on

hronicles 19:11 (KJV) says: “And, behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the Lord; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, for all the king’s matters: also the Levites shall be officers before you. Deal courageously, and the Lord shall be with the good.”

Historical Context: This verse is part of a passage that describes King Jehoshaphat’s reforms in the Kingdom of Judah. After returning from a military alliance with the wicked King Ahab of Israel, Jehoshaphat was confronted by Jehu, the seer, who rebuked him for joining forces with an ungodly king. In response, Jehoshaphat implemented various reforms in the kingdom, including appointing judges and charging them with righteous judgment.

Leadership and Accountability: This verse highlights the appointment of key officials to oversee matters of the Lord and the king’s affairs. Amariah, the chief priest, was responsible for spiritual matters, ensuring that the nation followed the law of the Lord. Zebadiah, the ruler of the house of Judah, was in charge of administrative and governmental affairs. This arrangement demonstrates the importance of having both spiritual and administrative leaders working together in harmony.

The Role of the Levites: The verse also mentions that the Levites would serve as officers before the appointed judges. In the Old Testament, the Levites were set apart for service to God, particularly in matters related to the tabernacle and worship. Here, they were given the responsibility of supporting the judges in their work, likely in matters concerning the law and the administration of justice.

Courage in Leadership: The verse concludes with the exhortation to “deal courageously.” This instruction is a reminder to the judges and leaders that they should be strong and resolute in carrying out their duties. It takes courage to administer justice impartially and make difficult decisions. The encouragement given is that as they act with courage, the Lord will be with the good, meaning that God will support and guide those who seek to do what is right.

Application to Our Lives: While this passage has its historical context, we can draw several principles from it. Firstly, it highlights the importance of appointing capable and godly leaders in both spiritual and administrative spheres. Secondly, it emphasizes the need for cooperation and teamwork between different leadership roles. Thirdly, it reminds us that as leaders, we should act with courage and integrity in carrying out our responsibilities, knowing that God is with us when we do what is right.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 19:11 provides insights into the leadership structure established by King Jehoshaphat in Judah. It emphasizes the roles of spiritual and administrative leaders, the involvement of the Levites, and the call to deal courageously. These principles can guide us in our own leadership roles and inspire us to seek wisdom and guidance from God as we fulfill our responsibilities.
