2 Chronicles 2:1

And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the Lord, and an house for his kingdom.

2 Chronicles 2:1 (KJV)

This verse opens the account of Solomon’s building projects after he became king of Judah. His father David had wanted to build a temple but was not permitted, so he encouraged Solomon to do it. The book of 2 Chronicles focuses on the kings of Judah and their faithfulness to God. Solomon had recently received wisdom and wealth from God, and now he put that blessing to work.

Solomon determined to build two houses: a temple for the name of the Lord and a palace for his own kingdom. The order matters. He put God’s honor first, before his own comfort and royal needs. The temple would replace the portable tabernacle used since Moses’ time, giving Israel a permanent place to worship and to meet with God. The palace was for his royal residence and his successors.

The temple was a visible sign of God’s presence among His people, where they offered sacrifices and prayers. Later, at its dedication, the glory of the Lord filled the sanctuary (2 Chronicles 7:1-3). This points to a greater truth: God’s dwelling is not limited to a building. In the New Testament, Christ is the true temple, and believers become God’s dwelling place through the Spirit.

Solomon’s decision teaches us to examine our priorities. Do we honor God first in our plans, or do we seek our own comfort and success before His work? Building for God’s name may require sacrifice, time, and resources, but it brings lasting blessing. The principle of putting God’s glory first applies to every area of life.

When we dedicate our lives to God and seek Him earnestly, His presence fills our hearts. Like Solomon, we can choose to make God’s glory the foundation of everything we build.
