2 Chronicles 3:2

And he began to build in the second day of the second month, in the fourth year of his reign.

2 Chronicles 3:2 (KJV)

Solomon became king after his father David. God had promised David that his son would build a house for His name. The temple in Jerusalem would be a permanent place for God’s presence among Israel. This verse records the exact day the work began.

The second month of the Hebrew calendar was called Zif. The fourth year of Solomon’s reign places this event about 966 BC. The precise date shows that Solomon did not delay. He started the temple promptly after securing his kingdom. This careful timing reflects order and obedience to God’s command. The deliberate record of the date also shows that God values faithful action at the appointed time.

The parallel account in 1 Kings 6:37 confirms the same date, anchoring the chronology. The temple was built on Mount Moriah, where Abraham had offered Isaac and where David had bought the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. This location links the temple to God’s covenant promises and to David’s preparation. The temple itself points to Christ, who called His body the true temple, and to the church as God’s dwelling place.

Believers can learn from Solomon’s example. When God gives a task, He values prompt and careful action. We should not postpone what He has called us to do. Preparation and precision honor Him. The verse encourages us to begin His work with diligence, trusting that our efforts, aligned with His will, have lasting significance.

God works through history in an orderly way. He sets times and seasons for His purposes. As we serve Him, we can rest in His timing, knowing that He who began a good work will complete it.
