2 Chronicles 3:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“Now these are the things wherein Solomon was instructed for the building of the house of God. The length by cubits after the first measure was threescore cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.”

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles is part of the historical books of the Old Testament, providing an account of the reigns of various kings of Israel and Judah. In this particular verse, it highlights the instructions given to Solomon for the construction of the house of God, which refers to the temple in Jerusalem.

  • Solomon’s Role:

Solomon, the son of David, succeeded him as the king of Israel. One of Solomon’s significant accomplishments was the construction of the temple in Jerusalem, which became the central place of worship for the Israelites. Prior to the construction, David, Solomon’s father, had made preparations for the temple, including gathering materials and making plans (1 Chronicles 28-29).

Detailed Measurements: In 2 Chronicles 3:3, specific measurements are given for the dimensions of the temple. The length of the temple was threescore cubits, which is sixty cubits, and the breadth was twenty cubits. A cubit was an ancient unit of measurement, approximately equal to the length of a forearm, typically ranging from 18 to 21 inches. Therefore, the temple had a length of 90 feet (60 cubits x 1.5 feet per cubit) and a width of 30 feet (20 cubits x 1.5 feet per cubit).

Symbolic and Spiritual Significance: The dimensions of the temple hold both symbolic and spiritual significance. The temple was not merely a physical structure but also a representation of God’s dwelling place among His people. The specific measurements highlight the order and precision in God’s instructions and the importance of creating a holy and dedicated space for worship.

Reflections for Today: Although the physical temple mentioned in this verse was constructed thousands of years ago, there are several lessons we can draw from it for our lives today:

  • God’s Presence: Just as the temple was considered the dwelling place of God, believers today are reminded that they are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16). We should strive to live in a way that honours and reflects God’s presence within us.
  • Dedication: The temple was built with great care and attention to detail. It reminds us to approach our worship and service to God with reverence and dedication. Our lives should be dedicated to serving and honouring Him.
  • Spiritual Worship: The temple was a central place for worship in the Old Testament, but in the New Testament, Jesus emphasised that true worship is not confined to a physical location (John 4:21-24). We are called to worship God in spirit and truth, wherever we are.
  • Order and Precision: The instructions given for the temple’s construction highlight the importance of order and precision in carrying out God’s plans. As believers, we should seek to align our lives with God’s Word and follow His instructions with careful attention.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 3:3 offers insights into the construction of the temple and the significance it held for the people of Israel. It reminds us of the importance of dedicating our lives to God, worshiping Him sincerely, and creating a space in our hearts for His presence.
