2 Chronicles 5:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place, to the oracle of the house, into the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims.”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it is essential to consider its context within the book of 2 Chronicles. This verse comes from a passage that describes the dedication of the temple that Solomon built for the Lord. It marks a crucial moment when the ark of the covenant, which contained the tablets of the Law, was brought into the most holy place, also known as the Holy of Holies.

The Ark of the Covenant:The ark of the covenant was a sacred object in the Old Testament, representing the presence of God among the Israelites. It was a wooden box overlaid with gold and carried two cherubim with outstretched wings. The ark contained the tablets of the Law, a jar of manna, and Aaron’s rod. The fact that the ark was brought into the most holy place signifies the importance of God’s presence and His covenant relationship with His people.

The Oracle of the House:The verse mentions that the ark was brought into the oracle of the house. The oracle, or inner sanctuary, was the innermost part of the temple, separated from the rest by a veil. It was the place where the high priest could commune with God’s presence. The fact that the ark was placed under the wings of the cherubim symbolizes the overshadowing protection and covering of God’s presence over the covenant.

Symbolic Meaning:The ark’s placement in the most holy place signifies the culmination of Solomon’s efforts in completing the temple and highlights the significance of God’s presence dwelling among His people. It represents the fulfillment of God’s promise to Solomon that He would establish His presence in the temple if Solomon remained faithful (2 Chronicles 7:12-18).

Application to Believers:While the physical temple and the ark of the covenant have historical and symbolic significance in the Old Testament, as believers, we can draw lessons from this verse. We can recognize that God desires to dwell with His people and have a close relationship with them. Through Jesus Christ, we have become the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16). God’s presence now resides within us, and we can experience His guidance, protection, and communion.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 5:7 portrays the moment when the ark of the covenant was brought into the most holy place in Solomon’s temple, symbolizing God’s presence among His people. This verse highlights the importance of God’s covenant relationship with His people and has implications for believers today, as we are now temples of the Holy Spirit.
