2 Chronicles 7:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“And the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for an house of sacrifice.”

Historical Context: This verse is part of the narrative of King Solomon’s dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. After completing the construction of the temple, Solomon gathered the people of Israel to dedicate it to the Lord. This event took place after the ark of the covenant was brought into the temple, and Solomon offered sacrifices before the Lord.

  • This verse records God’s response to Solomon’s prayer.
  • Prior to this verse, Solomon had prayed a powerful prayer of dedication, seeking God’s blessing and asking for forgiveness and restoration if the people turned away from Him.
  • In this verse, we see that the Lord appeared to Solomon by night. This indicates a divine encounter, where God manifested His presence to Solomon in a special way.
  • God’s appearance and subsequent conversation with Solomon highlight His personal involvement and interest in the affairs of His people. It signifies God’s response to Solomon’s prayer, indicating that He hears and answers prayers.
  • God acknowledges that He has heard Solomon’s prayer. This demonstrates God’s attentiveness to the pleas of His people and His willingness to respond.
  • God goes on to say that He has chosen the temple Solomon built as a house of sacrifice for Himself. This selection emphasizes God’s acceptance of the temple as a place of worship and His desire to dwell among His people.
  • The choice of the temple as a house of sacrifice signifies God’s presence and His willingness to meet with His people when they come before Him in the designated place.
  • God’s response to Solomon’s prayer reveals His faithfulness and commitment to His people. It demonstrates that God hears and answers the prayers of those who seek Him sincerely.
  • The dedication of the temple reminds us of the importance of having a designated place of worship and sacrifice. While physical buildings are not necessary for God’s presence, they serve as a focal point for the community to gather, worship, and seek God.
  • This verse also highlights the significance of seeking God’s approval and His chosen way of worship. It reminds us to align our lives with God’s will and to worship Him according to His revealed instructions.
  • Additionally, the verse encourages believers to approach God with humility, sincerity, and repentance, as demonstrated by Solomon’s prayer. It teaches us the importance of seeking God’s forgiveness and turning away from sin.
