2 Chronicles 7:15

Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.

2 Chronicles 7:15 (KJV)

This declaration is part of God’s response to King Solomon’s prayer of dedication for the newly built temple in Jerusalem. In that prayer, Solomon specifically asked that God’s eyes be open and His ears attentive to the prayers offered in that place (2 Chronicles 6:40). Here in 2 Chronicles 7:15, God answers directly, confirming that He has heard Solomon’s request and will indeed be attentive to the prayers made in the temple. This promise is recorded in the broader context of 2 Chronicles 7:12-22, where God outlines the blessings that accompany faithful worship and the conditions attached to them.

The temple was understood as the dwelling place of God’s presence among His people. By affirming that His eyes are open, God emphasizes His continual vigilance and awareness of the needs and petitions presented before Him. Likewise, the phrase “mine ears attent unto the prayer” underscores His willingness to hear, to engage, and to respond to the cries, praises, and supplications of the worshippers. The language highlights the relational nature of prayer: God is not a distant ruler but a caring Father who actively listens.

This promise, however, is not unconditional. In the preceding verses (2 Chronicles 7:12-14), God states that if His people humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways, then He will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land. Thus, God’s attentive eyes and ears are set upon prayers offered in sincerity and repentance, within a covenant relationship that calls His people to humility and obedience.

For contemporary believers, the principle remains relevant even though the physical temple no longer stands. The New Testament teaches that believers are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16). Thus, just as God was attentive to prayers made in the earthly temple, He is equally attentive to the prayers offered by His people today. This truth should foster confidence in prayer, assuring believers that their petitions are heard and that God’s eyes are open to their circumstances, concerns, and desires.

The passage also invites believers to seek God’s presence intentionally. By cultivating an atmosphere of worship, prayer, and communion, Christians position themselves to experience God’s guidance, provision, and the assurance of His attentive presence. As a practical step, readers are encouraged to study the surrounding verses and chapters to gain a fuller understanding of the covenantal promises attached to faithful prayer and temple worship.

God’s open eyes and attentive ears are a profound comfort. He is not indifferent to the prayers of His people. When we pray in humility and faith, we can trust that the same God who answered Solomon’s dedication prayer is listening to us, ready to respond according to His will and His covenant faithfulness.
