2 Chronicles 6:10

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

The Lord therefore hath performed his word that he hath spoken: for I am risen vp in the roome of Dauid my father, and am set on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised, and haue built the house for the Name of the Lord God of Israel. 2 Chronicles 6:10 (KJV)

This verse is part of King Solomon’s prayer of dedication for the newly built temple in Jerusalem. It occurs within a larger passage where Solomon acknowledges God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to David and to the nation of Israel.

Background: King Solomon, the son of David, succeeded his father as king of Israel. One of Solomon’s most significant achievements was the construction of the temple in Jerusalem. The temple was built as a permanent dwelling place for the Lord’s presence among His people.

God’s Faithfulness: In this verse Solomon acknowledges that the Lord has faithfully performed His word. He recognizes that his rise to the throne and his ability to build the house are the fulfillment of the promise made to David. Solomon declares that he is set on the throne of Israel as the Lord promised.

Inheritance from David: Solomon refers to his father David as “my father,” emphasizing the divine lineage and the covenant with David that promised an everlasting kingdom. His reign is presented as the rightful succession to David’s throne, an extension of David’s legacy.

Purpose of the Temple: Solomon states that he has built the house for the name of the Lord God of Israel. The temple was intended to serve as a central place of worship and a symbol of God’s presence among His people. It was meant to be a holy site where the Israelites could offer sacrifices, seek forgiveness, and gather to honor and worship God.

These points highlight Solomon’s recognition of God’s faithfulness, the link between his reign and David’s lineage, and the temple’s role as a place dedicated to worship and honor of the Lord. The verse underscores the significance of the temple as a place where God’s name is revered and His covenant with Israel is celebrated.
