2 Chronicles 6:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

Hearken therefore vnto the supplications of thy seruant, and of thy people Israel, which they shall make towards this place: heare thou from thy dwelling place, euen from heauen; and when thou hearest, forgiue. 2 Chronicles 6:21 (KJV)

The passage records King Solomon’s prayer of dedication for the newly built temple in Jerusalem. In this verse Solomon appeals to the LORD, asking Him to listen to the prayers and supplications of his servant and of the people of Israel when they are offered toward the temple.

Solomon acknowledges that, although the temple is a physical structure where worshipers gather, God’s true dwelling place is not limited to a building but is in heaven. This highlights the transcendence and omnipresence of God, reminding believers that the divine presence extends beyond any earthly sanctuary.

While the verse itself does not contain an explicit request for forgiveness, the larger dedication prayer later includes pleas for God’s mercy toward the people. This reflects an awareness of human fallibility and the need for divine compassion, underscoring the importance of repentance and seeking forgiveness.

Solomon, as the leader of Israel, assumes the role of intercessor, praying not only for himself but also on behalf of the nation. This demonstrates the responsibility of leaders to intercede for those they lead, seeking God’s mercy and protection for their well‑being and spiritual growth.

The passage encourages believers to approach God in prayer with humility and sincerity, trusting that He hears their petitions. It reminds us that while physical places of worship are valuable, our focus should be on God’s omnipresence, allowing us to connect with Him anywhere, anytime. Recognizing our own need for forgiveness enables us to extend grace to others, and as leaders we should continually intercede for those under our care, laying their needs before the Almighty.
