2 Chronicles 10:8

Posted on 18 May at 11:36

But he forsooke the counsel which the old men gaue him, and tooke counsell with the yong men, that were brought vp with him, that stood before him. 2 Chronicles 10:8 (KJV)

This verse is part of a larger passage describing the reign of Rehoboam, the son of King Solomon, and the events following Solomon’s death.

Rehoboam becomes king of Israel, and the people approach him, requesting relief from the heavy burden of labor and taxes imposed by Solomon. They ask Rehoboam to lighten their load. In response, Rehoboam seeks advice from two groups of advisors.

The first group consists of the older men who had served his father, Solomon. They advise him to listen to the people’s plea, be kind, and lighten their burdens. However, the second group consists of the young men who grew up with Rehoboam and served as his companions. They suggest taking a more forceful approach and increasing the burdens upon the people.

In the verse you mentioned, 2 Chronicles 10:8, we see that Rehoboam disregards the counsel of the older, experienced advisors and chooses to listen to the advice of the young men who were his peers. This decision ultimately leads to disastrous consequences. The verse highlights the importance of seeking wise counsel and the consequences that can arise from ignoring it.

The older men, who had more experience and wisdom, offered counsel that would have likely resulted in peace and unity. However, Rehoboam’s choice to disregard their advice in favour of the counsel of his peers led to a division among the people of Israel. This division ultimately led to the formation of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, separate from the rule of Rehoboam in the Southern Kingdom of Judah.

The broader lesson we can derive from this verse is the significance of seeking wise and experienced counsel when making decisions, especially in positions of leadership. It reminds us to value the wisdom and insight of those who have gone before us, as their experiences and perspectives can guide us towards better choices and outcomes.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 10:8 serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of disregarding wise counsel. It highlights the importance of seeking advice from those with experience and wisdom, rather than relying solely on the opinions of our peers.
