2 Chronicles 11:16
And after them out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seeke the Lord God of Israel, came to Ierusalem, to sacrifice vnto the Lord God of their fathers. 2 Chronicles 11:16 (KJV)
The verse is part of the historical account of King Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, and his reign over the divided kingdom of Israel after Solomon’s death. The united kingdom split into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. In this setting we read that individuals from all the tribes, even those residing in the northern kingdom, set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel and came to Jerusalem to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers.
Seeking the Lord is presented as a personal, intentional decision to pursue a relationship with God. It involves a genuine desire to know Him, to understand His will, and to obey His commandments. The verse calls believers to commit to prayer, to study God’s Word, and to seek His guidance in every aspect of life.
The act of traveling to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices underscores the centrality of worship in the Old Testament. Sacrifice symbolized the surrender of personal desire, the offering of something valuable to God, and the acknowledgment of His worthiness. It served as a means of atonement for sin, as well as an expression of gratitude and dedication to the Almighty.
Despite the political division of the kingdom, the fact that people from all the tribes united in worship demonstrates true unity and faithfulness. They recognized that authentic worship is centered on God, not on geographic or political boundaries. This unity serves as a timeless example for believers today to prioritize God’s kingdom and to worship Him together.
Application of this passage invites each of us to examine our own hearts. Have we set ourselves to seek the Lord wholeheartedly? Are we actively pursuing a relationship with Him, seeking His will, and prioritizing worship and sacrifice? The verse reminds us that true worship goes beyond external rituals; it requires sincerity, faithfulness, and a genuine desire to know and honor God.
In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 11:16 teaches the importance of seeking the Lord with all our hearts, the significance of sacrifice and worship, the value of unity among believers, and the need for faithfulness in our relationship with God. May we be inspired to set our hearts to seek the Lord and worship Him in spirit and truth.
