2 Chronicles 13:1
“Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah.”
Historical Context: The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account of the kings of Israel and Judah. Chapter 13 focuses on the reign of Abijah (also known as Abijam), who ruled over the southern kingdom of Judah. At this point in history, the kingdom of Israel had already split into two kingdoms, Israel in the north and Judah in the south. King Jeroboam refers to Jeroboam I, the first king of Israel.
Abijah’s Reign: Abijah became king of Judah in the eighteenth year of Jeroboam’s reign over Israel. His reign lasted for three years (2 Chronicles 13:2). Abijah was the son of Rehoboam, the grandson of Solomon, and the great‑grandson of David. He inherited the throne from his father, who was known for his unwise decisions and oppressive rule.
Conflict with Israel: 2 Chronicles 13 describes a significant conflict between Abijah and Jeroboam. Jeroboam had amassed a large army of 800,000 mighty warriors, while Abijah led a smaller force of 400,000 valiant men of war from Judah. Before the battle, Abijah delivered a powerful speech, proclaiming Judah’s faithfulness to God and accusing Jeroboam of forsaking the Lord’s commandments.
Abijah’s Appeal to God’s Covenant: Abijah reminded Jeroboam that God had given the kingdom of Israel to David and his descendants forever through a covenant. He emphasized that the priests and Levites of Judah were faithfully serving the Lord, while Jeroboam had appointed his own priests to serve the idols. Abijah’s appeal was rooted in the belief that God’s favor and protection were with Judah because of their adherence to the covenant.
Victory and Consequences: Despite being outnumbered, Abijah’s army defeated Jeroboam’s forces, killing 500,000 Israelite soldiers. Abijah’s victory demonstrated the faithfulness of God and the fulfillment of His covenant promises. However, despite this success, Abijah’s reign was not without its own flaws. The book of 2 Chronicles highlights that he did not fully follow the ways of the Lord and that his heart was not entirely devoted to God (2 Chronicles 13:2).
In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 13:1 introduces us to Abijah’s reign and sets the stage for the conflict between Judah and Israel. It presents a historical account with valuable lessons about faithfulness to God’s covenant, the power of God’s protection, and the importance of wholehearted devotion to Him.
