2 Chronicles 12:16

Posted on 18 May at 11:36

“And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David: and Abijah his son reigned in his stead.”

Context:The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account of the kings of Judah, the southern kingdom of Israel. In this particular verse, we see the end of the reign of Rehoboam, the son of Solomon and grandson of David.

Rehoboam’s reign:Rehoboam became king after the death of his father Solomon, but he made some unwise decisions that caused a division in the kingdom. The northern tribes of Israel rebelled against him, and only the tribes of Judah and Benjamin remained loyal to Rehoboam. Despite this setback, Rehoboam managed to strengthen his rule in Judah and established fortified cities.

Rehoboam’s death:The verse states that Rehoboam “slept with his fathers,” a euphemism used in the Bible to refer to death. It signifies that Rehoboam died and was buried in the city of David, which refers to Jerusalem, the capital of the kingdom.

Succession:The verse also mentions that Rehoboam’s son, Abijah, succeeded him as king. Abijah’s reign is described in more detail in subsequent chapters of 2 Chronicles.

  • Consequences of unwise decisions:Rehoboam’s reign serves as a reminder that unwise decisions can have significant consequences. His harsh and arrogant response to the people’s request for relief from heavy taxation caused the kingdom to split. It is important to seek wisdom and consider the counsel of others before making important decisions.
  • The brevity of life:Rehoboam’s death reminds us of the brevity and uncertainty of life. No matter how powerful or influential we may be, we all eventually face death. It underscores the importance of living a purposeful life and being prepared for eternity.
  • Succession and continuity:The verse highlights the process of succession in leadership. Rehoboam’s son, Abijah, took his place as king. This teaches us about the importance of preparing the next generation for leadership and ensuring a smooth transition to maintain stability and continuity.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 12:16 provides a brief account of Rehoboam’s reign, his death, and the passing of the crown to his son Abijah. It offers lessons about the consequences of unwise decisions, the brevity of life, and the significance of succession and continuity in leadership.
