2 Chronicles 14:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“And took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves.”

The verse you mentioned is found in the Old Testament book of 2 Chronicles, specifically in chapter 14, verse 3. Before we explore this particular verse, let’s provide some context by looking at the preceding verses:

“And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God: For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves: And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment” (2 Chronicles 14:2-4, KJV).

Historical Background:2 Chronicles is a historical account that focuses on the kings of Judah. In chapter 14, we encounter King Asa, who reigned in Judah for about 41 years. Asa is known for his faithfulness to God and his efforts to institute religious reforms in the land.

The Good and Righteous Actions of King Asa:2 Chronicles 14:3 states, “For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves.” This verse highlights some of the actions taken by King Asa to eradicate idol worship and restore the worship of the true God.

  • Removing the Altars of Strange Gods: Asa recognised the danger of idolatry and the worship of false gods. He removed the altars dedicated to these foreign gods, symbolising his commitment to the worship of the Lord alone.
  • Destroying the High Places: High places were often locations where idolatrous worship was conducted. Asa tore down these sites of false worship, demonstrating his dedication to purify the land of Judah.
  • Breaking Down the Images: Images or idols were used in the worship of pagan deities. Asa demolished these idols, emphasising his refusal to tolerate any form of idol worship.
  • Cutting Down the Groves: Groves were often associated with the worship of pagan deities, and they frequently involved practices contrary to the worship of the Lord. Asa took action to eliminate these groves, signifying his commitment to uprooting idolatry in the land.

Seeking the LORD God:The latter part of 2 Chronicles 14:3 states, “And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.” Here, we see that King Asa not only acted personally but also encouraged his people, the tribe of Judah, to seek the Lord God and follow His commandments.

This verse reflects the righteousness and spiritual leadership of King Asa. He understood the importance of purifying the nation from false worship and directing the people toward the true God.

Lessons we can learn from 2 Chronicles 14:3:

  • The danger of idolatry: Asa’s actions remind us of the importance of putting God first in our lives and avoiding the worship of false gods or idols. We should be vigilant about anything that may draw us away from wholehearted devotion to God.
  • The responsibility of leadership: Asa’s leadership role involved not only his personal dedication to God but also his influence in guiding others to seek the Lord. As leaders, we should encourage and guide those around us to follow God’s ways.
  • The significance of obedience to God’s commandments: Asa’s call to “do the law and the commandment” emphasises the importance of living in obedience to God’s Word. As believers, we are called to honour and follow the commandments of God, seeking to align our lives with His will.
