2 Chronicles 14:5

Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.

2 Chronicles 14:5 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the account of King Asa, the third ruler of Judah. He followed his father Abijah and reigned for forty-one years. The chapter describes his early efforts to restore true worship after a period of idolatry.

Asa removed the high places and the images from every city of Judah. High places were elevated platforms or hills where people worshipped idols. The images, called chammanim in Hebrew, were likely pillars or altars connected to sun worship. His action was thorough, covering the whole land, not just the capital. As a result, the kingdom was quiet before him, meaning it enjoyed peace and stability under his rule. This peace was not merely the absence of war; it was a settled rest that came as a gift from God.

Earlier in 2 Chronicles 14:3, Asa had already removed foreign altars and high places near Jerusalem. This verse extends that reform to all the cities, showing his complete commitment. The peace that followed was not accidental; it came as a blessing from God in response to Asa’s obedience. The pattern is clear: when the king removed what dishonoured God, God gave the nation rest.

Asa’s example teaches that faithful reform brings divine rest. Believers today can examine their own lives for spiritual high places, habits or priorities that compete with devotion to God. Removing them may be difficult, but it leads to inner quietness and peace. The thoroughness of Asa’s reform challenges us to be honest about areas we have left untouched.

God honours those who take His commands seriously. Asa did not compromise or leave any city untouched. His thoroughness reminds us that true obedience is not partial. When we remove what dishonours God, He grants the calm that our hearts long for. The peace that follows obedience is a foretaste of the rest He promises to all who seek Him wholeheartedly.
