2 Chronicles 14:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the Lord came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.”

Context:2 Chronicles 14 records the reign of King Asa of Judah. Asa was a righteous king who sought the Lord and led the people in the ways of God. The verse in question comes from a passage that describes Asa’s victory over the Ethiopians.

The Battle against the Ethiopians:

Prior to this verse, the Ethiopians had invaded Judah with a massive army. King Asa, recognizing the military disadvantage, called upon the Lord for help. God answered Asa’s prayer and granted him victory over the Ethiopians.

The Fear of the Lord:

The verse states that “the fear of the Lord came upon” the surrounding cities. This refers to the dread and awe inspired by the power and might of God as they witnessed the defeat of the Ethiopians. It highlights the sovereignty and supernatural intervention of God in the affairs of His people.

Spoiling the Cities:

As a result of the victory, the people of Judah were able to spoil the cities surrounding Gerar. The spoils were abundant and testified to the providence of God. This was not an act of greed or injustice but rather the fulfilment of the spoils of war, which was customary in ancient times.

  • Reliance on God:King Asa’s victory teaches us the importance of relying on God in times of difficulty or opposition. Asa turned to God in prayer, demonstrating his faith and trust in God’s power to deliver.
  • The Fear of the Lord:The fear of the Lord is not only a healthy reverence for God but also a recognition of His authority and power. When we live in the fear of the Lord, it affects those around us and can lead to conviction and repentance.
  • God’s Provision:The spoils gained in this victory serve as a reminder that God is the provider of our blessings. He can bless us abundantly when we walk in obedience and seek His guidance.
  • Spiritual Battles:Though this passage primarily speaks of a physical battle, it can also be applied to spiritual battles in our lives. Just as Asa relied on God’s power to overcome his enemies, we must rely on God’s strength to conquer the spiritual challenges we face.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 14:14 highlights the victory and provision that God granted to King Asa and the people of Judah. It reminds us to trust in God, live in the fear of the Lord, and seek His guidance in our battles, both physical and spiritual.
