2 Chronicles 17:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“But sought to the LORD God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on hronicles 17:4 (KJV): “But sought to the LORD God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.”

Context:hronicles 17 is a chapter that focuses on the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah. Jehoshaphat was one of the righteous kings of Judah who followed in the footsteps of his father, King Asa. This verse specifically highlights Jehoshaphat’s commitment to seeking the Lord and following His commandments.

Seeking the Lord:Jehoshaphat’s first action was to seek the Lord. This implies a desire to know and understand God, to have a personal relationship with Him, and to seek His guidance in all matters. Seeking the Lord involves earnestly pursuing His presence, His will, and His ways. It demonstrates a dependence on God rather than relying on human wisdom or self-sufficiency.

Walking in His commandments:Jehoshaphat not only sought the Lord but also walked in His commandments. This indicates his commitment to obeying God’s laws and living according to His principles. Walking in God’s commandments requires a lifestyle of faithfulness and obedience to God’s Word. It involves aligning one’s thoughts, attitudes, and actions with the moral and ethical standards set by God.

Contrasting the doings of Israel:The latter part of the verse mentions that Jehoshaphat did not follow the doings of Israel. This refers to the sinful practices and idolatry that were prevalent in the northern kingdom of Israel at that time. The Israelites had turned away from the true worship of God and had embraced pagan gods and practices. Jehoshaphat, in contrast, chose to distance himself from such behavior and instead remained faithful to the Lord.

Application:Seeking God: Like Jehoshaphat, we should earnestly seek the Lord in our lives. This involves spending time in prayer, studying His Word, and cultivating a personal relationship with Him. When we seek God, He promises to reveal Himself to us (Jeremiah 29:13). Obedience to God’s commandments: Jehoshaphat’s commitment to walking in God’s commandments challenges us to obey God’s Word in our lives. As followers of Christ, we are called to obey His teachings and live according to His standards. Obedience demonstrates our love for God (John 14:15). Avoiding the ways of the world: Jehoshaphat’s example reminds us to resist the temptation to conform to the sinful practices of the world around us. We should be discerning and reject any behavior or belief that contradicts God’s Word (Romans 12:2). Seeking godly leadership: Jehoshaphat’s commitment to seeking the Lord influenced the people of Judah. As individuals, we should seek out and support leaders who prioritize seeking God and walking in obedience to Him.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 17:4 teaches us the importance of seeking the Lord, walking in His commandments, and avoiding the sinful ways of the world. May we follow Jehoshaphat’s example and strive to live a life that is pleasing to God.
