2 Chronicles 17:4

But sought to the Lord God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.

2 Chronicles 17:4 (KJV)

2 Chronicles 17 focuses on the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah, a king who followed the faithful example of his father, King Asa. This verse highlights Jehoshaphat’s commitment to seeking the Lord and obeying His commandments, setting the tone for the blessings and strength that God gave his kingdom.

Jehoshaphat’s first action was to seek the Lord. This was not a casual or inherited religion; it was a deliberate, personal pursuit of God’s presence, will, and guidance. Seeking the Lord means depending on Him rather than on human wisdom or self-sufficiency.

He also walked in God’s commandments. This indicates a lifestyle of faithfulness and obedience, aligning his thoughts, attitudes, and actions with God’s moral and ethical standards. His obedience was comprehensive, covering the moral, ceremonial, and judicial aspects of God’s law.

The verse contrasts Jehoshaphat with the doings of Israel, the northern kingdom. Israel had turned to idolatrous worship, including the golden calves at Dan and Bethel. Jehoshaphat deliberately rejected those practices and remained faithful to the Lord, even though such faithfulness was countercultural.

Jehoshaphat’s seeking echoes his father Asa’s command for Judah to seek the Lord and obey His law (2 Chronicles 14:4). His faithfulness also stands in contrast to later Judah, which failed to keep God’s commandments and walked in the statutes of Israel (2 Kings 17:19).

Like Jehoshaphat, we should earnestly seek the Lord through prayer, studying His Word, and cultivating a personal relationship with Him. When we seek God, He promises to reveal Himself to us (Jeremiah 29:13).

Obedience to God’s commandments is a mark of our love for Him (John 14:15). We are called to obey His teachings and live according to His standards, not merely to know them.

Jehoshaphat’s example also reminds us to resist conforming to the sinful practices of the world. We should be discerning and reject any behavior or belief that contradicts God’s Word (Romans 12:2).

Finally, Jehoshaphat’s devotion influenced the people of Judah. We should seek out and support leaders who prioritize seeking God and walking in obedience to Him.

2 Chronicles 17:4 teaches us the importance of seeking the Lord, walking in His commandments, and avoiding the sinful ways of the world. May we follow Jehoshaphat’s example and strive to live a life that is pleasing to God.
