2 Chronicles 17:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of the LORD with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people.”

This verse is part of the account of King Jehoshaphat’s reign over Judah. During his reign, Jehoshaphat sought to strengthen the spiritual condition of the kingdom. One of the significant actions he took was to appoint Levites, priests, and certain influential individuals to go throughout the cities of Judah and teach the people the book of the law of the Lord.

Let’s explore the key themes and lessons we can draw from this verse:

Teaching and Instruction:The verse highlights the importance of teaching and instruction in the spiritual life of the people. The appointed individuals were given the responsibility to teach the book of the law of the Lord. Teaching the Scriptures enables individuals to understand God’s commands, promises, and principles, leading them to a deeper relationship with Him.

Knowledge of God’s Word:The verse emphasizes that those who were teaching the people had the book of the law of the Lord with them. This underscores the significance of having access to God’s Word. By having the Scriptures, they were equipped to teach accurately and guide the people in the ways of the Lord. It also highlights the importance of studying and familiarizing ourselves with the Word of God.

Spreading God’s Word:The appointed teachers did not confine themselves to one location. They went throughout all the cities of Judah, ensuring that the people had access to the book of the law of the Lord and were taught its contents. This demonstrates the zeal and commitment to spread God’s Word, ensuring as many people as possible have the opportunity to know and understand His truth.

Leadership and Responsibility:King Jehoshaphat’s initiative to appoint teachers reflects his leadership and responsibility in promoting spiritual growth among his people. As leaders, we have a responsibility to guide and instruct those under our care in the ways of the Lord. Whether in our families, churches, or communities, we should seek to promote the study and understanding of God’s Word.

Application to our lives:This verse serves as a reminder for us today. We have the privilege of having the complete Bible at our disposal. Just as those teachers were entrusted with the book of the law of the Lord, we have a responsibility to study and understand the Scriptures and then share that knowledge with others. By doing so, we can contribute to the spiritual growth and well‑being of those around us.
