2 Chronicles 17:18

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“And next him was Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and fourscore thousand ready prepared for the war.”

Context: And next him was Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and fourscore thousand ready prepared for the war. 2 Chronicles 17:18 (KJV)

“And next him was Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and fourscore thousand ready prepared for the war.” 2 Chronicles 17:18 is part of a passage that describes the organisation and military preparedness of King Jehoshaphat of Judah. This particular verse highlights Jehozabad, who had a substantial army of 180,000 soldiers who were fully equipped for war.

To gain a deeper understanding of this verse, it’s essential to examine the broader context by considering the preceding verses. In 2 Chronicles 17, we learn that Jehoshaphat was a righteous king who sought the Lord and walked in His ways. He took steps to strengthen the kingdom of Judah both spiritually and militarily.

Jehoshaphat instituted reforms to enhance the spiritual condition of his kingdom. He removed idolatry and false gods from the land, sending officials and Levites throughout Judah to teach God’s laws to the people. As a result, the fear of the Lord fell upon the surrounding nations, causing them to refrain from attacking Judah.

Verse 18 specifically focuses on Jehozabad, a military leader under Jehoshaphat. It mentions his sizeable army of 180,000 troops who were ready and prepared for war. This figure signifies the military strength and readiness of the kingdom of Judah during this period. The emphasis on preparedness suggests that Jehoshaphat was diligent in ensuring the defence and security of his kingdom.

From a spiritual perspective, we can draw some important principles from this passage. King Jehoshaphat’s commitment to following God’s ways and removing idolatry demonstrates the significance of maintaining a close relationship with the Lord. By prioritising spiritual matters and seeking God’s guidance, he positioned his kingdom for success.

Furthermore, Jehoshaphat’s military preparedness reminds us of the importance of being ready to face challenges. While we may not face literal warfare, the Bible frequently speaks of spiritual warfare. Christians are encouraged to arm themselves with the whole armour of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) and be prepared to stand against the schemes of the enemy. Just as Jehoshaphat prepared his army, we should be vigilant in preparing ourselves spiritually to face the battles of life.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 17:18 showcases Jehozabad and his substantial army, reflecting the military strength and readiness of Judah under King Jehoshaphat. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of spiritual and physical preparedness, emphasising the need to seek the Lord, remove anything that hinders our relationship with Him, and be prepared for the challenges we may face.
