Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Context
Paul writes to believers who face real spiritual opposition. The immediate context calls them to “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might” (Ephesians 6:10), showing that the strength for standing comes from God, not self-effort. The following verse clarifies that the struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:12), reinforcing the need for spiritual armor.
Meaning
The command to “put on the whole armour of God” implies an active, ongoing responsibility for believers to clothe themselves with the spiritual provision God has given. The Greek word translated “wiles” (methodeia) refers to the devil’s cunning schemes, deceptive strategies, or evil tricks. The armor is not something God uses against His enemies, but what He has provided for His people and bestows on them. It is called “the armour of God” because it is prepared by Him, is divine and spiritual in nature (not carnal), and is used in fighting the Lord’s battles. The purpose is defensive: to stand firm against the devil’s attacks. The verse emphasizes the reality of spiritual opposition and the necessity of divine enablement.
The whole armor—detailed in the following verses—is required, not just a part of it. Each piece plays a vital role in our defense against the devil’s schemes:
Belt of Truth: The belt represents the truth of God’s Word that holds everything together and guards against deception.
Breastplate of Righteousness: The breastplate protects our heart and represents the righteousness we receive through faith in Christ.
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: These shoes enable us to stand firm in the gospel of peace, bringing the message of reconciliation and readiness to share God’s love with others.
Shield of Faith: The shield is used to extinguish the fiery arrows of the enemy. Faith enables us to trust in God’s promises and overcome doubt and fear.
Helmet of Salvation: The helmet protects our minds and reminds us of our secure salvation in Christ, guarding against doubt and discouragement.
Sword of the Spirit: The sword represents the Word of God, which is our offensive weapon against the enemy’s lies and temptations.
The devil, also known as Satan, is a cunning adversary who seeks to deceive, discourage, and destroy believers. He employs various strategies or “wiles” to undermine our faith and lead us away from God’s truth. By putting on the whole armor of God, we can stand firm against the devil’s schemes. We are not defenseless but empowered by God’s strength and equipped with spiritual weapons. As we rely on God’s strength and put on His armor, we can resist and overcome the enemy. It is not by our own might but through the power of God that we can withstand and be victorious in spiritual battles.
Application
Regularly put on the whole armor of God by studying and applying the truth of God’s Word in our lives.
Be aware of the enemy’s strategies and tactics, and guard against deception and spiritual attacks.
