Ephesians 6:12

Posted on 18 May at 14:30

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Context:To better understand Ephesians 6:12, it is important to consider the broader context of the chapter. In Ephesians 6, Paul is addressing the topic of spiritual warfare and the armor of God. He urges believers to put on the whole armor of God to stand against the schemes of the devil.

Spiritual Warfare:The verse begins with the statement, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood.” Here, Paul emphasizes that the battle believers face is not merely against human beings or physical entities. The struggles we encounter are not limited to the physical realm but are primarily spiritual in nature.

Spiritual Enemies:Paul identifies the entities against which believers wrestle. He mentions four categories:

  • a. Principalities: These refer to various levels of spiritual authorities, possibly including both good and evil angelic beings.
  • b. Powers: This term denotes the supernatural powers, dominions, and authorities, both earthly and heavenly, that are opposed to God’s kingdom.
  • c. Rulers of the darkness of this world: These are spiritual forces that operate in the realm of darkness and seek to exert control over people’s lives and the world.
  • d. Spiritual wickedness in high places: This phrase can also be translated as “spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places.” It refers to malevolent spiritual beings that oppose God’s purposes.

Nature of the Battle:Paul’s purpose in highlighting these spiritual enemies is to help believers recognize the true nature of the battle they face. The struggle is not against physical foes or human opponents, but against unseen spiritual forces aligned against God’s kingdom and His people.

Application:Understanding the reality of spiritual warfare can help believers prepare and equip themselves with the armor of God (described in Ephesians 6:13-17) to stand firm in faith and resist the schemes of the enemy.
