2 Chronicles 18:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

And Iehoshaphat saide vnto the king of Israel, Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the Lord to day. 2 Chronicles 18:4 (KJV)

The scene unfolds as King Jehoshaphat of Judah visits King Ahab of Israel. Jehoshaphat is portrayed as a righteous ruler who earnestly seeks to follow the ways of the Lord, whereas Ahab is described as an unrighteous king whose reign is marked by idolatry and disobedience to God’s commands. This contrast sets the stage for Jehoshaphat’s appeal for divine guidance.

Jehoshaphat’s request is clear: before embarking on any military venture, he urges Ahab to inquire of the LORD. He acknowledges that true success depends on aligning decisions with God’s will, demonstrating a commitment to rely on the Lord’s wisdom rather than on human understanding alone.

The call to “inquire at the LORD” underscores the importance of seeking God’s counsel prior to major decisions. It implies consulting a prophet or seeking direct revelation so that God’s direction can be discerned. This posture reflects humility and a recognition of God’s sovereign wisdom.

For contemporary believers, the verse teaches a timeless principle: we must seek God’s guidance in every aspect of life. Whether faced with great or small choices, prayer, Scripture study, and wise counsel from fellow believers are essential. Our limited understanding is complemented by God’s perfect wisdom, which surpasses all human insight.

Finally, Jehoshaphat’s example highlights the need for discernment. Not every voice claiming divine authority is trustworthy, as later the narrative shows Ahab’s prophets delivering false assurances. Believers are therefore called to test all messages against the truth of God’s Word, seeking godly counsel and aligning themselves with Scripture to accurately discern God’s will.
