2 Chronicles 18:22

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“Now, therefore, behold, the Lord hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophets, and the Lord hath spoken evil against thee.”

2 Chronicles 18:22 is a verse found within the context of a narrative involving King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah.

In this chapter, King Ahab proposes to King Jehoshaphat that they go to war against Ramoth‑Gilead.

King Jehoshaphat, being a righteous king, suggests seeking the counsel of the Lord before making such a decision.

In response to King Jehoshaphat’s suggestion, King Ahab gathers his 400 prophets who prophesize favourable outcomes for the battle, assuring both kings that they will be successful.

However, Jehoshaphat recognises that these prophets are not true prophets of the Lord and requests to hear from a prophet who speaks the word of God.

Micaiah, a true prophet of the Lord, is summoned, and he gives a prophecy that is contrary to what the false prophets have proclaimed.

Micaiah reveals that he has seen a vision of the Lord sitting on His throne and the host of heaven standing around Him.

The Lord asks who will entice Ahab to go up and fall at Ramoth‑Gilead.

In response, a spirit volunteers to be a lying spirit in the mouth of Ahab’s prophets, deceiving him into going to battle and meeting his downfall.

The verse in question, 2 Chronicles 18:22, is part of Micaiah’s prophecy, where he explains to King Ahab that the Lord has allowed a lying spirit to influence the false prophets, leading them to speak falsehoods and ultimately to Ahab’s demise.

It reveals God’s sovereignty over all things, including the spirits and the actions of individuals.

This passage carries several important lessons.

It highlights the importance of seeking the counsel of the Lord and discerning between true and false prophets.

It also demonstrates God’s justice in allowing deception to come upon those who reject His truth and choose to follow false teachings.

Moreover, this verse serves as a reminder of God’s ultimate authority and control over the spiritual realm.

It shows that even though evil spirits may carry out their deceptive activities, they do so under God’s permission and within His divine plan.

This reinforces the concept that God is all‑knowing and uses all things, even the schemes of the enemy, to accomplish His purposes.
