2 Chronicles 23:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

This is the thing that yee shall doe, A third part of you entring on the Sabbath, of the priests and of the Leuites, shalbe porters of the doores. 2 Chronicles 23:4 (KJV)

This

is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you entering on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites,

shall be

porters of the doors; 2 Chronicles 23:4 (KJV)

2 Chronicles 23 records the account of Athaliah’s overthrow and the coronation of Joash as the rightful king of Judah. Athaliah was the wicked queen who usurped the throne of Judah and sought to destroy the royal line of David. She had killed all the royal descendants except for Joash, who was hidden away in the temple by Jehoiada the priest.

In this verse we see the specific instructions given to the priests and Levites regarding their duties on the Sabbath. It highlights the significance of proper order and reverence in worship, teaching that even mundane tasks such as being a doorkeeper are essential and have their place in serving God.

The Levites were appointed by God to assist the priests in temple service, including guarding the doors of the temple. By assigning a portion of them to serve as porters, the Levites ensured the security and orderliness of the sanctuary, thereby maintaining its sanctity.

The instruction that a third of the priests and Levites should be porters on the Sabbath indicates that regular worship and service continue on the holy day of rest. The Sabbath does not require a complete cessation of activity but calls for a dedicated time of rest and worship, allowing necessary duties to be performed.

Dividing the priests and Levites into three groups, with one group serving at the doors, illustrates the unity and cooperation required in worship. Their collective effort ensured the smooth functioning of temple services and reminds believers today of the value of unity in advancing God’s kingdom.

Although the specific instructions relate to ancient Israel, we can draw valuable lessons today. We are reminded of the importance of reverence and order in our worship, the need for dedicated service even during times of rest, and the significance of unity within the body of Christ.

Thus 2 Chronicles 23:4 provides insight into the duties of priests and Levites during the coronation event, teaching about worship, the role of the Levites, Sabbath observance, and unity, and how these principles apply to our lives today.
