2 Chronicles 23:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And the Leuites shall compasse the king round about, euery man with his weapons in his hand, and whosoeuer else commeth into the house, hee shalbe put to death: but be you with the King when he commeth in, and when he goeth out. 2 Chronicles 23:7 (KJV)

Context: To understand the context, it is important to look at the preceding verses. Athaliah, the wicked queen who had usurped the throne of Judah, had reigned for six years, bringing idolatry and corruption to the kingdom. However, Jehoiada, the high priest, hatched a plan to restore the rightful king and purify the land. In verse 7, we find Jehoiada instructing the Levites regarding their roles in protecting the newly crowned king, Joash.

The Levites were to encircle the king, armed with weapons in their hands. Their purpose was to ensure the safety of the king and prevent any harm from befalling him. They were given the authority to execute anyone who attempted to enter the house where the king resided, but who did not have permission or had evil intentions.

This verse highlights a couple of important principles.

Protection and Security: The Levites were entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the king. This act symbolizes the need for strong spiritual leaders who protect and guide God’s chosen people. Similarly, believers today are called to be watchful and protect one another from spiritual harm.

Purity and Separation: The strict command to put to death anyone who entered the house unauthorized reveals the seriousness of the situation and the need for holiness. The Levites were to maintain the sanctity of the king’s presence by ensuring that only those with genuine intentions were allowed near him. This underscores the importance of guarding our hearts and separating ourselves from anything that may corrupt our relationship with God.
