2 Chronicles 23:16

“And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, and between all the people, and between the king, that they should be the LORD’S people.”

This verse occurs within the context of a significant political and religious transition in Judah. Prior to this event, the wicked Queen Athaliah had seized the throne and attempted to eradicate the royal line of David. However, Joash, the son of Ahaziah and the rightful heir to the throne, was miraculously preserved by his aunt, Jehosheba, and raised in secret for six years.

In 2 Chronicles 23, the high priest Jehoiada leads a coup to overthrow Athaliah and restore the rightful king to the throne. Jehoiada gathers the priests, Levites, and commanders of the royal guard, and together they bring seven-year-old Joash into the temple. There, Jehoiada makes a covenant, or an agreement, between Joash, the people, and the Lord, declaring that they would be the Lord’s people.

This covenant had several significant aspects:

• Restoration of the Davidic Line:By crowning Joash, the rightful descendant of David, as king, Jehoiada and the people were reestablishing the Davidic dynasty, which was a fulfillment of God’s promise to David.
• Reaffirming the Covenant with God:By making this covenant, Jehoiada and the people were renewing their commitment to God and His laws. They recognised that their obedience and allegiance should be to the Lord alone.
• Unity and Loyalty:The covenant brought together the king, the priests, and the people, creating a sense of unity and loyalty to God and the Davidic throne. It emphasised the importance of a unified nation under God’s guidance.
• Rejecting Idolatry:The overthrow of Athaliah and the restoration of Joash’s reign were acts of defiance against the idolatry that had plagued Judah under Athaliah’s rule. The covenant symbolised a turning away from false gods and a return to the worship of the true God.

This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of covenantal relationships and the significance of obedience to God’s commands. It highlights the restoration of a rightful ruler and the restoration of proper worship and devotion to the Lord.
