Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said, Slay her not in the house of the Lord.

Context
This verse records a decisive moment in the overthrow of Athaliah, the usurping queen of Judah. She had seized the throne by killing the royal heirs, but Jehoiada the priest had hidden the rightful king, Joash. Now he brought out the military captains and gave them a direct order concerning Athaliah. The setting is the temple precincts, where the priest had orchestrated the coronation of the true king.
Meaning
The phrase “Have her forth of the ranges” means to take her out from the ranks or rows of the temple guard. She was to be removed from the protected area of the temple. The command that anyone following her should be slain with the sword shows how seriously her threat was taken. Yet Jehoiada also said, “Slay her not in the house of the Lord.” This instruction protected the temple from being defiled by bloodshed, even during a necessary act of judgment. The execution was to occur outside the sacred space. This balance between zeal for God’s house and reverence for its holiness is striking.
