2 Chronicles 23:17

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And the people went, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal, and the priest’s sons, and the worshippers of Baal, that were in Jerusalem, and the altar of Baal, and the house that was in Jerusalem.”

Context:This verse is part of the account of Jehoiada the priest organizing a coup against Queen Athaliah, who had taken the throne of Judah and introduced idolatry into the land. Jehoiada, with the support of the priests and Levites, crowned Joash as the rightful king of Judah at the age of seven.

Historical Background:Understanding the historical context of this verse is important. Queen Athaliah was the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel of Israel, who were known for their promotion of idol worship. Athaliah continued this idolatrous practice in Judah after marrying into the royal family. The people of Judah had turned away from the worship of the true God and followed the pagan practices of Baal worship.

God’s Command against Idolatry:Throughout the Bible, God consistently warns against idolatry and the worship of false gods. The Ten Commandments explicitly state, You shall have no other gods before me (Exodus 20:3). The destruction of the house of Baal and the altars and idols was a fulfilment of God’s command to remove all forms of idolatry from the land.

Symbolism of the Act:The tearing down of the house of Baal, the smashing of the altars and idols, and the killing of the priest of Baal were symbolic acts of cleansing and purifying the land from idolatry. They represented a decisive break from the false worship that has corrupted the people of Judah. It was a tangible expression of their commitment to worship the true God and to restore the rightful king.

Upholding God’s Covenant:The actions of Jehoiada and the people were in line with God’s covenant with Israel. Throughout the Old Testament, God emphasised the importance of worshiping Him alone and rejecting false gods. By removing the influence of Baal worship, Jehoiada and the people were reaffirming their commitment to the covenant and seeking God’s favour.

Importance of Spiritual Leadership:Jehoiada, as the high priest, played a crucial role in leading the people back to God. He organised and executed the plan to restore the rightful king and remove idolatry from the land. This emphasises the significance of godly leaders in guiding the people in the ways of the Lord and standing against ungodliness.

Application:Idolatry takes various forms in today’s world, such as the worship of money, power, or self. As believers, we are called to examine our hearts and rid ourselves of any idols that hinder our relationship with God. Just as Jehoiada and the people took decisive action against idolatry, we should be proactive in rooting out sin from our lives and seeking spiritual renewal. The role of spiritual leaders is crucial in guiding and instructing the people of God. We should support and pray for godly leaders who uphold biblical principles.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 23:17 demonstrates the importance of rejecting idolatry, upholding God’s covenant, and the role of spiritual leadership. It serves as a reminder for us to remain steadfast in our commitment to worship the one true God and remove any idols from our lives.
