2 Chronicles 23:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

So they layd handes on her, and when shee was come to the entring of the horse gate, by the kings house, they slew her there. 2 Chronicles 23:15 (KJV)

2 Chronicles 23 records the account of the restoration of Joash to the throne of Judah. Joash’s grandmother, Athaliah, had seized power and executed all the royal heirs, but Joash was hidden in the temple by his aunt Jehosheba and protected by Jehoiada the priest. When Joash turned seven years old, Jehoiada revealed him to the priests and Levites, gathered support, and dethroned Athaliah. The verse in question describes the execution of Athaliah outside the horse gate of the king’s house.

Key Themes and Points of Interest:

God’s Sovereignty – This passage demonstrates God’s sovereignty and His faithfulness to His covenant promises. Despite Athaliah’s attempts to eliminate the Davidic line, God preserved a remnant and ensured the continuation of the royal lineage.

Justice and Judgment – Athaliah’s wickedness and usurpation of the throne led to her downfall. Her execution can be seen as an act of divine justice, as she reaped what she had sown.

God’s Protection – The story of Joash’s protection and eventual restoration highlights God’s providential care. He used Jehoiada and other faithful individuals to safeguard the young heir until the appointed time for his reign.

The Faithfulness of God’s People – The involvement of Jehoiada, Jehosheba, and the priests and Levites demonstrates the faithfulness of God’s people. They were willing to take risks and stand up for what was right, even in the face of great danger.

The Consequences of Sin – Athaliah’s violent death serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin and the judgment that awaits those who oppose God’s purposes. Her actions resulted in her own demise.

Application:

Faithfulness in Adversity – The story of Joash’s restoration reminds us to remain faithful to God even in difficult circumstances. Just as God preserved Joash, He can also provide for and protect us when we face challenges or opposition.

Standing for Righteousness – The example of Jehoiada and others who stood against Athaliah’s evil rule encourages us to take a stand for righteousness in our own lives. We should be willing to confront injustice and work towards positive change in our communities.

Trusting in God’s Justice – This passage teaches that God is the ultimate judge, and justice will prevail in His perfect timing. We should trust in God’s sovereignty, knowing that He will bring about justice and judgment in His way and according to His purposes.

Honoring God’s Promises – The story of Joash’s restoration reinforces God’s faithfulness to His promises. We can trust that God will fulfill His word and accomplish His purposes, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
