2 Chronicles 24: 1 (KJV)

The book of 2 Chronicles provides a historical account of the kings of Judah, emphasizing their spiritual and religious lives. Chapter 24 introduces Joash, who became king at the tender age of seven and ruled for forty years in Jerusalem. This remarkable early accession underscores that God can use individuals of any age to fulfill His purposes.

Under the guidance of the priest Jehoiada, Joash initially did what was right in the sight of the Lord, bringing about a spiritual revival in Judah. The verse also records his mother’s name, Zibiah of Beersheba. Although the Scriptures give little detail about Zibiah, the mention of her name suggests she had some influence on Joash’s upbringing and the development of his leadership qualities. The influence of godly parents is highlighted as a lasting factor in shaping a child’s faith.

After Jehoiada’s death, Joash turned away from the Lord and allowed idolatry to return to the land. His apostasy culminated in the tragic killing of Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada, who had rebuked the king’s idolatry. This act of disobedience brought severe consequences, leading to Joash’s eventual defeat and death and inviting judgment upon the kingdom of Judah.

From Joash’s life we draw several lessons. First, age is not a barrier to serving God; his early reign reminds us that youthful individuals can have a profound impact for God’s kingdom. Second, the influence of godly parents, as seen in Zibiah’s role, is vital for nurturing faith. Third, turning away from God invites danger and spiritual decline, urging believers to guard their hearts and remain steadfast. Finally, disobedience carries serious repercussions, emphasizing the importance of obeying God’s commands.
