Jeremiah Chapter 13

Summery

Jeremiah receives a message from God instructing him to take a linen girdle (belt) and wear it around his waist without washing it. After a while, God commands Jeremiah to take the girdle and hide it in a hole near the Euphrates River. Many days later, God tells Jeremiah to retrieve the girdle. However, when he finds it, the girdle is ruined and completely worthless.

Through this symbolic act, God explains to Jeremiah the spiritual condition of the people of Judah. Just as the girdle was marred and ruined, so have the people become corrupted and worthless in their idolatry and disobedience. God states that just as the girdle clings to the waist of a man, He had chosen the people of Israel to be close to Him, but they turned away from Him to follow idols and wickedness.

God declares His intention to punish them by scattering them among other nations. The people’s pride and stubbornness have blinded them, preventing them from repenting and turning back to God. The chapter concludes with a warning of impending judgment, highlighting the consequences of their actions.
