2 Chronicles 24:4

And it came to passe after this that Ioash was minded to repaire the house of the Lord. 2 Chronicles 24:4 (KJV)

And it came to pass after this,

that Joash was minded to repair the house of the LORD. 2 Chronicles 24:4 (KJV)

2 Chronicles 24 records the reign of Joash, who ascended the throne of Judah at the tender age of seven. The chapter notes that he “did what was right in the sight of the Lord” while he was under the guidance of the priest Jehoiada. In the early years of his reign Joash displayed a strong commitment to restoring the temple, which had fallen into disrepair under previous rulers. Verse 4 records his deliberate intention to repair the house of the Lord, revealing a deep reverence for God and a desire to revive proper worship.

The temple in the Old Testament was the central place where God’s presence dwelt among His people. By prioritising its repair, Joash acknowledged the spiritual significance of having a proper dwelling for divine worship and demonstrated his commitment to the covenant and to obeying God’s commands. His example teaches that worship is not confined to a physical structure; it extends to the daily life of every believer. We are called to make worship a priority, seeking God’s presence both individually and corporately.

Joash’s dedication to the temple should inspire believers to care for the spiritual “house” God has entrusted to us. As Paul reminds us, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19). Therefore we ought to pursue spiritual health, holiness, and a life that is a worthy dwelling for God’s presence. Moreover, Joash’s concern for the temple reflects a reverence for God’s Word, since the temple was the place where the Law of Moses was taught and the people gathered to hear divine instruction. Likewise, we should value and study Scripture, allowing it to shape our thoughts and actions.

Applying Joash’s example, we might ask ourselves: Do we truly prioritize worship and fellowship with God? Are we investing time and effort into cultivating our relationship with Him? Are there areas of our spiritual lives that need repair or renewal? Finally, do we regularly engage with the Bible, seeking to understand and apply its teachings? By answering these questions, we can follow Joash’s heart for God’s house and honor the One who dwells within us.
