2 Chronicles 24:17
Now after the death of Iehoiada, came the Princes of Iudah, and made obeysance to the king: then the king hearkened vnto them. 2 Chronicles 24:17 (KJV)
To better understand the significance of this verse, we should consider its context. The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account that focuses on the reigns of the kings of Judah. In chapter 24 we read about Joash, who became king of Judah at the age of seven. During the early years of his reign he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, following the counsel of the high priest Jehoiada.
Jehoiada was a faithful priest who guided and protected Joash, ensuring that the young king followed the ways of the Lord. His death marked a turning point for Joash and his relationship with God. Without Jehoiada’s godly influence, Joash became vulnerable to the negative influence of the princes of Judah.
After Jehoiada’s death the princes of Judah approached the king and “made obeisance” to him. The phrase suggests they paid homage, perhaps seeking favor and influence. These princes were individuals with political power and authority within the kingdom, and their counsel now carried weight over the king.
The verse records that Joash “hearkened unto them,” indicating that he listened to the princes and allowed himself to be swayed by their advice. This shift in counsel led him away from the ways of the Lord and set the stage for later trouble in his reign.
The passage highlights the importance of godly influences. The death of Jehoiada underscores how vital godly mentors and advisors are in our lives; surrounding ourselves with people who encourage us to follow God’s ways helps us stay on the right path.
It also warns of the dangers of worldly influences. Joash’s decision to listen to the princes instead of seeking God’s guidance resulted in negative consequences, reminding us to be cautious about the influences we allow into our lives and to prioritize God’s Word above worldly counsel.
Finally, the text affirms personal responsibility. Even though others may exert pressure, Joash remained accountable for his own choices. We, too, must remember that we are responsible for our actions and should strive to align ourselves with God’s will, even when others may lead us astray.
