2 Chronicles 24:20
And the spirit of God came vpon Zechariah the sonne of Iehoiada the priest, which stood aboue the people, and said vnto them: Thus saith God, Why transgresse yee the commandements of the Lord, that yee cannot prosper? Because yee haue forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you. 2 Chronicles 24:20 (KJV)
The historical backdrop of this verse is found in 2 Chronicles 24, which records the reign of Joash, king of Judah. At the beginning of his reign Joash was guided by the priest Jehoiada, who had raised and mentored him. Under Jehoiada’s counsel Joash restored the temple and instituted reforms that re‑established proper worship of the LORD. After Jehoiada’s death, however, Joash turned away from the Lord, permitting the people of Judah to worship idols and abandon covenant faithfulness.
In the midst of this apostasy the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest. The text tells us that Zechariah “stood above the people,” indicating his public role as a prophetic voice. Empowered by the Spirit, he was divinely inspired to deliver a direct rebuke from the Lord to the nation.
Zechariah’s proclamation is stark: “Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.” The question confronts the people with the logical result of their disobedience—prosperity is withheld when they break God’s commandments. Their forsaking of the LORD has provoked a reciprocal forsaking by God.
The passage underscores the importance of obedience. God’s commandments are presented as clear instructions that, when obeyed, bring blessings and prosperity. Conversely, transgression and abandonment of the covenant invite adverse consequences, including loss of divine favor and protection.
Application for today is evident. 2 Chronicles 24:20 calls each believer to examine personal and communal faithfulness. By prioritising a relationship with God, honoring His commands, and avoiding idolatry in any form, we position ourselves to experience God’s blessings and avoid the pitfalls of disobedience.
In conclusion, this verse serves as a powerful reminder that God does not overlook the blood of the innocent nor ignore covenant breach. It urges us to evaluate our obedience, recommit to God’s statutes, and live lives that honour Him, trusting that faithfulness yields divine prosperity and protection.
