2 Chronicles 28:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And he sacrificed also, and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.”

Context:2 Chronicles 28:4 is part of a larger passage describing the reign of King Ahaz of Judah. Ahaz was an ungodly king who turned away from the Lord and practised idolatry. This verse specifically highlights his participation in pagan worship practices.

Idolatrous Practices:The verse mentions that Ahaz sacrificed, burned incense, and worshiped in various high places, hills, and under green trees. These were common locations where pagan worship took place in ancient times. Ahaz disregarded the proper worship of God in the temple in Jerusalem and instead engaged in idolatrous practices.

Consequences of Idolatry:Ahaz’s idolatrous actions were in direct violation of God’s commandments. The worship of false gods and participation in pagan rituals were strictly forbidden in the law given to Israel. Such actions led to the corruption of the nation and drew the people away from their true relationship with God. The consequences of idolatry would ultimately bring judgment upon Ahaz and the kingdom of Judah.

  • True Worship:The verse also highlights the importance of true worship. God desires genuine worship from the heart, offered in the right manner and at the right place. As Christians, we are called to worship God in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24). We should seek to honour Him through obedience to His Word and by giving Him the rightful place of authority in our lives.
  • Repentance and Restoration:Despite Ahaz’s disobedience and idolatry, God continued to reach out to His people and offered them opportunities for repentance. The story of Ahaz serves as a reminder that God is merciful and forgiving. If we turn away from our sinful ways and seek Him with a sincere heart, He is ready to forgive us and restore us into a right relationship with Him.
