2 Chronicles 28:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

But a Prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded: and hee went out before the hoste that came to Samaria, and said vnto them, Behold, because the Lord God of your fathers was wroth with Iudah, he hath deliuered them into your hand, and yee haue slaine them in a rage that reacheth vp vnto heauen. 2 Chronicles 28:9 (KJV)

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles 28:9 takes place during the reign of King Ahaz of Judah. Ahaz was an evil king who turned away from the Lord and followed the idolatrous practices of the surrounding nations. As a result, God allowed the kingdom of Israel to conquer Judah, and many of the people of Judah were killed.

The Prophet Oded: In this verse we are introduced to the prophet Oded, a messenger of God sent to confront the victorious army of Israel. Oded boldly proclaims that the reason God allowed Judah to be defeated was because of their unfaithfulness and disobedience to Him.

God’s Anger and Judah’s Consequences: Oded makes it clear that the Lord was angry with Judah because they had forsaken His commandments and engaged in idolatry. The phrase “slain them in a rage that reacheth up unto heaven” describes the excessive violence committed by Israel against the people of Judah.

The Message of Oded: Oded’s message serves as a warning to the victorious army of Israel. He reminds them that Judah is their brethren, descendants of their forefathers, and emphasizes that it was God’s anger that led to Judah’s defeat, not their own strength or military prowess.

Lessons and Applications:

God’s Judgment: The verse highlights the principle that God’s judgment comes upon those who persistently disobey His commands, reminding us that God takes sin seriously and holds His people accountable.

Repentance and Restoration: Oded’s message calls Israel to repent of their excessive violence and return the captives, demonstrating that God expects His people to show mercy even in conflict.

Brotherly Love and Compassion: Oded’s words remind us of the importance of showing compassion and mercy to our brethren, even in times of conflict. Instead of reveling in their victory, Israel is called to reflect on the role they played in Judah’s downfall and respond with compassion.

Prophetic Ministry: Oded’s role as a prophet demonstrates the significance of God’s messengers in proclaiming His truth, even in difficult circumstances. Prophets were chosen by God to speak His words and bring about conviction, repentance, and restoration among His people.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 28:9 teaches us about the consequences of disobedience, the importance of repentance and restoration, and the role of prophets in delivering God’s message. It serves as a reminder that God’s judgment is just, but He also offers the opportunity for repentance and forgiveness.
