2 Chronicles 29:32

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And the number of the burnt offerings, which the congregation brought, was threescore and ten bullocks, a hundred rams, and two hundred lambs: all these were for a burnt offering to the Lord.”

Context:2 Chronicles 29 recounts the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah. Hezekiah became king at the age of 25 and was known as a righteous king who sought to restore the worship of God in Judah. The passage in question takes place during Hezekiah’s efforts to cleanse and consecrate the temple, which had been neglected and desecrated during the reign of his father, Ahaz.

Bible Study:

Restoration of true worship:Hezekiah was determined to restore proper worship and obedience to God in Judah. This passage highlights the sincere repentance and commitment of the people as they gathered together to offer burnt offerings to the Lord. It shows their desire to seek God’s forgiveness and reestablish a right relationship with Him.

The significance of burnt offerings:Burnt offerings were a central part of Israel’s sacrificial system. They involved the complete burning of an animal on the altar as an offering to God. The burnt offerings symbolized complete surrender, dedication, and atonement for sin. By offering such a large number of animals as burnt offerings, the people were demonstrating their commitment to fully submit to God’s will and seek His forgiveness.

The generosity of the congregation:The number of burnt offerings mentioned in the verse is significant. The people willingly brought seventy bulls, one hundred rams, and two hundred lambs. This demonstrates their generosity and willingness to give their best to God. They understood the importance of sacrificial worship and the need to offer their resources and possessions to honor God.

Unity and communal worship:The congregation came together with a unified purpose to worship God. The verse emphasizes that the burnt offerings were brought collectively by the congregation. This highlights the power of unity and communal worship, where the entire community was involved in seeking God’s favor and dedicating themselves to Him. It also shows that the restoration of the temple and true worship required the participation and commitment of the people as a whole.

The response of God:In the following verses (2 Chronicles 29:33-36), we see that God responded favorably to the people’s repentance and offerings. The sacrifices were accepted, and the priests rejoiced, praising God for His faithfulness. The dedication of the people and the restoration of true worship set the stage for God’s blessing and renewal in the land.

Application:

  • Sincere repentance and commitment:The passage encourages us to examine our own hearts and renew our commitment to God. Like Hezekiah and the people of Judah, we need to acknowledge our sins, seek God’s forgiveness, and dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly to Him.
  • Generous and sacrificial worship:The people’s generous offering of their best possessions challenges us to give sacrificially to God. It reminds us that worship involves offering our time, talents, and resources to honor and serve Him faithfully.
  • Unity and communal worship:The passage highlights the power of unity in worship. It reminds us of the importance of gathering together with fellow believers to seek God’s presence and collectively offer our worship. It encourages us to value and participate in the corporate worship of the Church.
  • Expecting God’s response:Just as God responded to the repentance and offerings of the people in this passage, we can trust that He will respond to our sincere worship and commitment. We can have faith that God honors those who seek Him diligently and blesses those who wholeheartedly serve Him.

seek Him diligently and blesses those who wholeheartedly serve Him.

Remember, studying the Bible not only helps us gain knowledge but also calls us to apply its principles in our lives. May this study of 2 Chronicles 29:32 encourage you to seek God with sincerity, offer your best to Him, worship in unity with fellow believers, and trust in His faithfulness.
