2 Chronicles 32:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

Know ye not what I and my fathers haue done vnto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those landes any wayes able to deliuer their lands out of mine hand? 2 Chronicles 32:13 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the narrative of King Hezekiah’s reign over Judah. Hezekiah is portrayed as a faithful king who instituted sweeping religious reforms: he removed idols, purified the temple, and restored the Passover celebration (2 Chronicles 29‑31). The passage occurs at a moment when Judah faces a formidable external threat.

The Assyrian Empire, under King Sennacherib, was expanding aggressively, having already subjugated the northern kingdom of Israel. Sennacherib set his sights on Judah and sent officials to Jerusalem with a message designed to intimidate the inhabitants and to persuade them to surrender rather than trust in the God of Israel.

In delivering that message, the Assyrian officials reminded the people of Jerusalem of the fate of the nations they had conquered. They asked, rhetorically, whether the gods of those nations had ever been able to rescue their lands from the Assyrian hand. The question was intended to highlight the impotence of foreign deities and to undermine confidence in any protector other than the God of Judah.

The comparison underscores a central biblical theme: the futility of placing trust in idols or foreign gods. The conquered peoples’ gods proved powerless before the Assyrian army, whereas the God of Israel had repeatedly demonstrated His ability to deliver His people in the past.

From this passage we draw several key lessons. First, God’s faithfulness is evident in the historical record of deliverance; recalling those acts strengthens believers in times of crisis. Second, true trust belongs to God alone, not to any created thing. Third, the verse affirms God’s supreme power and sovereignty over all nations and their deities.

Application for today follows naturally. Believers are encouraged to look back on God’s past faithfulness, allowing those memories to bolster confidence when facing modern challenges. The passage calls us to abandon reliance on “gods” of culture, wealth, or self‑sufficiency, and to place our hope wholly in the living God who remains in control of history and personal circumstance.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 32:13 serves as a powerful reminder that the God of Israel is unmatched in power and compassion. Trusting Him yields deliverance and protection, while reliance on any other source leaves one vulnerable. May this truth inspire steadfast faith and reliance on the Almighty in every season of life.
