2 Chronicles 32:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

Who was there among all the gods of those nations, that my fathers vtterly destroyed, that could deliuer his people out of mine hand, that your God should bee able to deliuer you out of mine hand? 2 Chronicles 32:14 (KJV)

Historical Background:

2 Chronicles 32 records the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah, a ruler who sought to restore true worship of Yahweh. During his reign the Assyrian king Sennacherib launched a massive invasion, threatening to overrun Jerusalem and subjugate the nation.

Hezekiah’s Faithful Response:

Faced with an overwhelming enemy, Hezekiah did not abandon his trust in the God of Israel. He took practical steps to strengthen the city’s defenses, yet his primary exhortation to the people was to place their confidence in Yahweh and reject the intimidation of the Assyrian army.

The Arrogant Challenge:

In verse 14 the Assyrian envoy taunts Judah, asking, “Who is there among all the gods of the nations which my fathers destroyed, that can deliver out of my hand?” The question mocks the power of Israel’s God by comparing Him to the deities of conquered peoples, implying that no god could save the Judeans from Assyrian control.

Reflection on God’s Faithfulness:

The verse forces believers to consider the incomparable nature of the God of Israel. It highlights a fundamental truth: no other god can match Yahweh’s sovereignty and ability to rescue His people.

God’s Response and Deliverance:

The narrative continues in verses 21‑22, describing how an angel of the Lord struck down a great number of the Assyrian troops, causing Sennacherib to withdraw in shame. Jerusalem was miraculously delivered, demonstrating God’s supremacy over all other gods and confirming His covenant faithfulness.

Lessons for Today:

2 Chronicles 32:14 serves as a powerful reminder that God remains sovereign even when challenges appear insurmountable. Believers are encouraged to trust wholly in God’s faithfulness and to resist the taunts and threats of the world.

Application:

  • Trust in God: In every difficulty, place your confidence in the same God who rescued Jerusalem.
  • Resist Intimidation: Like Hezekiah, refuse to be cowed by worldly pressures; let the Lord be your source of courage.
  • Seek God’s Deliverance: Turn to prayer and reliance on God when trouble arises, remembering that He alone can rescue us from any situation.
