2 Chronicles 32:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?”

Context:This verse is part of the account of King Hezekiah’s reign in the book of 2 Chronicles. During this time, the king of Assyria, Sennacherib, launched a campaign against the fortified cities of Judah, seeking to conquer them. Hezekiah, relying on the Lord, took measures to strengthen Jerusalem’s defences and encouraged the people to trust in God for their deliverance. Sennacherib’s representatives attempted to undermine the faith of the people by speaking against Hezekiah and the God of Israel.

Warning against Deception:The verse begins with a warning to the people of Judah not to be deceived or persuaded by Hezekiah’s words. Sennacherib’s representatives were trying to sow doubt and discourage the people from relying on their king and God for deliverance. Similarly, in our lives, we may encounter voices or circumstances that seek to deceive us and lead us away from trusting in God. This verse reminds us to be discerning and cautious, holding firm to our faith in the face of opposition.

The Power of God:Sennacherib’s representatives boasted about the conquests of the Assyrian empire, claiming that no god of any nation or kingdom had been able to deliver their people from their hands. They were essentially challenging the power of God. However, this verse serves as a reminder that God’s power surpasses that of any human kingdom or idol. The history of Israel was filled with examples of God’s intervention and deliverance, and Hezekiah’s trust in God was not misplaced.

God’s Faithfulness:Hezekiah’s trust in God was well-founded because God had delivered His people throughout history. By reminding the people of the faithfulness of God to their ancestors, the verse seeks to strengthen their confidence in Him. It is a powerful testimony that God is not limited by human power or circumstances but is able to rescue His people from any situation. This should encourage us to put our trust in God, knowing that He is faithful and capable of delivering us from our challenges.

Comparison to Other Gods:The verse also emphasises the futility of placing trust in false gods. Sennacherib’s representatives assert that no god of any nation or kingdom had been able to deliver their people from Assyria’s hand. This serves as a contrast to the God of Israel, who had a proven track record of deliverance. It highlights the uniqueness and superiority of the God of Israel over all other gods. As believers, we are called to recognise the supremacy of God and reject the allure of false gods or idols in our lives.
