2 Chronicles 34:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.”

In this verse, we learn about King Josiah, who reigned over Judah. This passage highlights the actions taken by Josiah during his reign to seek after the God of David, his father, and to bring religious reforms to the kingdom.

Seeking after the God of David:Josiah began to seek after the God of David at a young age, specifically in the eighth year of his reign. This indicates his desire to follow in the footsteps of his ancestor, King David, who was known for his devotion to God. Josiah’s decision to seek God reflects his longing for a personal relationship with the Lord and his commitment to living a righteous life.

Purging Judah and Jerusalem:In the twelfth year of his reign, Josiah initiated a significant religious reform throughout Judah and Jerusalem. The reform involved removing the high places, groves, carved images, and molten images that were associated with pagan worship. These practices and objects were contrary to the worship of the one true God prescribed in the Law of Moses.

By removing these idolatrous elements from the land, Josiah aimed to cleanse the nation and restore the proper worship of God. This act demonstrated his determination to follow God’s commandments and his commitment to eliminating idolatry and false worship from the land.

The verse emphasizes Josiah’s early dedication to seeking God and his subsequent actions to eradicate idolatry from the kingdom. His reign is often regarded as a period of revival and spiritual renewal in Judah.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 34:3 serves as a testament to the importance of seeking God with a sincere heart and the necessity of eliminating anything that hinders true worship and devotion to Him. It encourages believers to prioritise their relationship with God and to diligently remove any influences or practices that divert their focus from the Lord.
