2 Chronicles 34:23

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me,”

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles 34 is part of the account of King Josiah’s reign in Judah. Josiah became king at the age of eight and reigned for thirty-one years. He was known as one of the righteous kings of Judah who sought to bring about religious reforms and turn the people back to God.

The Background: During Josiah’s reign, the Book of the Law (likely the Book of Deuteronomy) was rediscovered in the temple. Hilkiah, the high priest, found the book and gave it to Shaphan, the scribe, who then read it to King Josiah. Upon hearing the words of the Law, Josiah tore his clothes in repentance and sought the Lord’s guidance and mercy.

The Verse’s Message: In verse 23, Josiah sent messengers to Huldah, the prophetess, to inquire of the Lord regarding the contents of the discovered book. Huldah’s response serves as a message from the Lord to Josiah and the people of Judah. She tells the messengers to convey the words of the Lord to Josiah.

The Faithful Prophetess: Huldah played a significant role during this time by providing divine guidance and insight. Her presence highlights that God’s message is not limited to male prophets but extends to women as well. Huldah’s authority and her position as a prophetess demonstrate that God can use anyone, regardless of gender, to deliver His message.

The Message from the Lord: Although the specific content of Huldah’s response is not recorded in verse 23, subsequent verses reveal that the Lord affirmed Josiah’s sincere heart and expressed His approval of Josiah’s desire to humble himself before God and seek His guidance. The Lord promised to bring disaster upon Judah but delayed it until after Josiah’s death because of his repentant heart.

Lessons for Us: The importance of God’s Word: The discovery of the Book of the Law demonstrates the significance of Scripture in guiding our lives. We should value and study God’s Word regularly, allowing it to shape our understanding and actions.

Repentance and seeking God’s guidance: Josiah’s response of tearing his clothes and seeking the Lord’s guidance teaches us the importance of repentance and humility. When we recognize our sins and turn to God, He is gracious and willing to guide us.

God’s mercy and judgment: The response of the Lord through Huldah teaches us about God’s character. He is merciful and slow to anger, but judgment may still come if we persist in disobedience. It is essential to seek God’s forgiveness and walk in obedience to His Word.

The role of prophets: Huldah’s role as a prophetess reminds us that God can use anyone to convey His message. We should be open to receiving God’s Word and His guidance, regardless of who He chooses to speak through.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 34:23 shows us the importance of seeking God’s guidance, the significance of His Word, and the role of prophets in delivering God’s message. It encourages us to repent, humble ourselves before the Lord, and live in obedience to His commands.
