And the men did the worke faithfully, and the ouerseers of them were Iahath, and Obadiah, the Leuites, of the sonnes of Merari, and Sechariah, and Meshullam, of the sonnes of the Kohathites, to set it forward: and other of the Leuites, all that could skill of instruments of musicke. 2 Chronicles 34:12 (KJV)

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles 34:12 is part of the narrative about King Josiah’s reforms in Judah. Josiah was one of the righteous kings who sought to bring the people back to the worship of the Lord. During his reign he initiated a comprehensive renovation of the temple in Jerusalem, which had fallen into disrepair and neglect because of the people’s idolatry.

The Faithful Workers: The verse highlights the involvement of various individuals who were entrusted with the task of carrying out the restoration work in the temple. These workers are commended for their faithfulness in performing their duties. They were diligent, fulfilled their responsibilities with skill, and showed dedication in the work they performed.

The Overseers: Four individuals were appointed as overseers of the workers. Jahath and Obadiah were Levites from the sons of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam were from the sons of the Kohathites. These overseers coordinated and supervised the work, ensuring that it progressed smoothly and according to the plan.

Skill in Musical Instruments: The verse also mentions that some Levites involved in the restoration project were skilled in playing musical instruments. Their service therefore extended beyond construction; they also led and participated in worship and praise through music, demonstrating that worship was an integral part of temple service.

Lessons to Learn: This passage reminds believers of the importance of faithfulness in service to God. The workers’ commitment, reliability, and skill illustrate how we should serve the Lord faithfully in whatever capacity we are called, using the abilities He has given us. The inclusion of Levites skilled in music underscores the significance of worship in the believer’s life. Music can uplift, inspire, and express devotion, so we are encouraged to offer worship to God with sincerity and skill, following the example of these faithful servants.
