2 Chronicles 35:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

And prepare your selues by the houses of your fathers, after your courses, according to the writing of Dauid king of Israel, and according to the writing of Solomon his sonne. 2 Chronicles 35:4 (KJV)

The instruction in this verse is given by King Josiah as he prepares the Levites and priests for the service of the Lord. Josiah, a king noted for his righteousness, sought to restore true worship in Judah after the nation had turned away from God. He directed the worship leaders to follow the regulations that had been established by King David and recorded in the writings attributed to David and to Solomon, his son. David had organized the Levitical courses and the temple service (see 1 Chronicles 23‑24), while Solomon had overseen the construction of the temple according to the plans given to David (1 Chronicles 28:11‑19). By calling the people to act “according to the writing of David” and “according to the writing of Solomon,” Josiah emphasized the authority of the inherited temple guidelines.

Respect for Tradition

– Josiah’s command highlights the importance of honoring the practices handed down by faithful predecessors. The continuity of worship preserves the covenant relationship that God established with Israel, and believers today are likewise called to value the teachings and traditions preserved by those who have faithfully served God.

Order and Organization

– The verse underscores that worship must be carried out with proper structure. The Levitical courses provided a systematic way for the priests and Levites to serve, ensuring that every duty was performed in an orderly fashion. In our own service to God, planning, discipline, and orderly conduct enable us to honor Him effectively.

Commitment to God’s Word

– The reference to the “writing of David” and the “writing of Solomon” points to authoritative instructions that guided temple worship. This reminds us that Scripture remains the reliable guide for our lives, calling us to diligent study and obedience.

Faithfulness to God’s Commandments

– Josiah’s reforms were sparked by the rediscovery of the Book of the Law (2 Chronicles 34:14‑21). His dedication to restoring the Passover and other rites was an expression of faithfulness to God’s commandments. Likewise, we are urged to remain faithful to God’s law and to seek His will in every aspect of life.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 35:4 teaches us to respect the heritage of God’s worship, to maintain order in our service, to rely on the authority of Scripture, and to be faithful to God’s commandments. By applying these principles, we can serve the Lord with reverence and devotion, just as Josiah and the Levites did in their renewal of worship.
